Disney to Begin Furloughs

corporate-logo-1920x1080

Earlier today, The Walt Disney Company announced that select Cast Members and employees will be temporarily furloughed as the company tries to deal with this very challenging situation.

Here’s the announcement:

“Over the past several weeks, COVID-19 has completely reshaped our daily lives as well as our business. A new chapter in the history of our company began when we closed our theme parks, hotels, stores, and other operations to help lead the effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. This reality has been sobering to all of us. As difficult as this decision was, we know it was the right one to help protect our Cast Members, our Guests, and our communities.

As we look ahead, we must make tough decisions about the impacts of the extended closure, and are doing so with two priorities in mind:

Caring for our Cast Members: As a company and a leadership team, our focus now is on how best to care for our Cast Members – including keeping [them] safe, protecting [their] benefits, and preserving [their] job for the future.

Protecting the future of Disney: As we navigate an extraordinarily challenging business climate, we want to best position our company to weather this crisis.

With the utmost care and consideration, we are instituting a temporary, short-term furlough for executive, salaried, and non-union hourly Cast Members based in the U.S. with the exception of those whose roles or projects are crucial to maintaining our operations during this closure period, effective April 19.

By taking this step now, we are able to allow Cast Members to:

Maintain health and insurance benefits coverage, with the company paying both the employer and employee weekly benefit contributions.

If eligible, elect to use some or all of their available paid-time off hours (vacation and floating holidays) at the start of the furlough.

Once furloughed, access an extra $600 per week in federal compensation through the economic stimulus bill, as well as state unemployment insurance benefits.

Continue progress toward their education goals with the Disney Aspire education program.

Use services provided by LifeCare, Employee Assistance Program and wellness resources.

And most important, this allows us to preserve the jobs of Cast Members who are, and will continue to be, an important part of the Disney family; and provide an easier return to work when our communities recover from the impact of COVID-19.

This certainly is one of the most difficult choices the company has ever faced. But we are committed to doing everything we can – even when the decisions are unimaginably hard – to help preserve jobs and help ensure that our Cast Members can return to their roles.”

Matsuriza (the female drummers who have been performing in Epcot for more then two decades) will no longer be there once the park reopens after the temporary closure due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Here’s the official statement posted on the Facebook page of one of the performers:

“We’re deeply saddened to announce that Sunday, 3/15/20 will be Matsuriza’s last day performing at Epcot indefinitely.

We had a fantastic 25 year run on the pagoda stage working with some of the best managers and tech team on property. Performing at the Japan Pavilion has been an honor, representing our heritage and culture to millions of guests from all over the world.

It really has been a dream come true and we’re very heartbroken to see it come to an end so suddenly. We are beyond grateful to the Walt Disney World Co. for giving us the most amazing opportunity of a lifetime.

And to our fans, YOU are what we will miss the most. Thank you for all of the love and support you have have given us throughout these years. It is our biggest hope that one day Disney will bring us back.

Until then, sayonara.

Disney Issues Statement About Coronavirus

wdw-parking

Earlier today, Dr. Pam Hymel, Chief Medical Officer of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products released the following statement regarding the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and how it’s currently affecting the parks:

“As you may know from the news, COVID-19, commonly known as novel coronavirus 2019, has become a more widespread concern.

As part of our commitment to the health and well-being of our Cast [Members], Guests, and the larger community, we are carefully monitoring this evolving situation and are in regular contact with health agencies for information and guidance. Our parks and resorts are welcoming guests as usual and we continue to implement preventive measures in line with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health agencies.

Our parks and resorts have high standards of cleanliness, which assists with illness prevention, and we have health and safety protocols in place, such as:

•Training for Cast Members, with ongoing reinforcement on a regular basis

•Defined cycles for frequent cleaning and disinfection of targeted areas

•Easy access to handwashing facilities and hand sanitizers

•Quick response to spills, trash, and other situations

•End of day sanitation procedures for restroom, kitchen, and other facilities

•Frequent cleaning and “wash down” of outdoor locations, including walkways and queues

Additionally, our onsite health teams and leaders are communicating with our cast members about illness prevention, including the guidance of the CDC.

The CDC recommends everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, such as staying home when sick, washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, following proper respiratory cough etiquette, avoiding close contact with people who are sick and avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

The CDC provides more detailed information on its website and, as always, your personal physician is a valuable resource for specific medical questions you may have.”
